Leeds is considered a wildland-urban interface with a high to very high risk of wildfire according to the Utah Department of Natural Resources (“DNR”). As the DNR states on its website, “As a homeowner, you are not powerless in your defense against wildfires. By taking a proactive approach to wildfire mitigation, you can significantly increase your safety and your home’s likelihood of survival during a catastrophic wildfire event. The actions you take to reduce the risk on your property before a fire occurs can make all the difference.” The Town of Leeds receives emergency medical and fire services from the Hurricane Valley Fire Special Service District (“HVF”). HVF provides residential lot assessments of how Firewise the property is and how the property can be made more Firewise. As Mayor, in addition to making residents aware of this service, I would arrange for periodic presentations from HVF, where groups of residents could learn of ways to reduce our community’s fire risk.
